On the 50th anniversary of the Independence of Mauritius, a National Kite Festival was held for the very first time! And FLY360 was there to support them throughout this journey. FLY360 was more than willing to help revive the lost tradition of flying kites in Mauritius,  spreading the joy of kite making, and flying with international countries.

With a long-term experience in the field and dedicated kits, FLY360 was bound to make this event spectacular! A seven day trip in Mauritius was more than enough to showcase why kite festivals should become an annual program for the people in Mauritius.

Behind The Scenes

Since this was ever the first kite festival in Mauritius, the trip stretched to seven days to set up the one-day event, with plenty of time to spare for fine-tuning. It had to be perfect! The vision was to revive the unfortunately forgotten kite making and flying tradition amongst people of all ages. And for this to happen efficiently, there was much to do.

Firstly, the team members of FLY360 had to set the stage. There were numerous kite flying trial runs before 5th of August, the day of the festival, at La Prairie, the location of the event. This was to see whether the location was adept for kite flying (which it was!). Out on the open beach, the winds of La Prairie allowed the kites soar as high as your eyes could go! With the location set, the other details of the event were left to figure out.

The consulting team kept the event team busy with suggestions and dos and don’ts before the day of the event based on their experience from the previous kite-flying festivals. Yes, there have been many!

This event was funded by the State Bank of Mauritius which shared the vision of FLY360. The event comprised two main segments. The first was a kite competition for locals which had three contest categories, and the latter was a kite flying show by FLY360 members!

Day of the Event: 5th August with The President!

Like any other well-planned event, this festival also began with locals registering to participate in the competition in the morning. Along with their self-made kites, the people were welcomed to bright-coloured tents decorated with designer kites, all made and set up by FLY360. The kites were in various shapes, colours, and sizes, and lit up the entire beach.

The competition was all set to begin after the registration process! Ashok Shah and Nisarg Shah, the founder and Directors of FLY360, attended the event as one of three jury members. He was a senior and experienced consultant to the rest of the jury member. They surely did have a hard time figuring out the eligible prize winners. The locals were all competing for the winning title, and everyone brought their best foot forward. With enthusiasm like this, of course, it was a hard judgement to make!

As the competition began on one side of the beach, the other side was accompanied by members of the team who were flying designer kites! The bright morning sky was open and ready for some kite flying business! For the competition, there were three categories: the basic diamond kite, the “Patang” and “Box Kites”. Each category gave away three prizes to each of these categories.

The President of Mauritius, Barlen Vyapoory, attended the event and flew kites with the team members. In fact, when the members spoke to the press of the friendship amongst India and Mauritius, Vyapoory mentioned Mauritius’ strong ties with Narendra Modi. He graced the event as he stayed until the prize distribution in the afternoon.

In the End

You’d think that the setting up of the event or perhaps even making and flying the kites would be the most difficult part for the team. But you’re completely wrong! Choosing three winners for each of the categories was immensely challenging! This process was very taxing.

We realised that even though the tradition of kite flying had taken a hit in the past few years, the local’s enthusiasm towards this event was not dull at all!. It was encouraging to watch the locals indulging enthusiastically in the event. But more than that, the talent visible in these people through their stunning kites were a sight for sore eyes!

FLY360, motivated by the success of this event, packed up after the prize distribution event and headed back to Mumbai to reignite the kite flying tradition in yet another city!
