Kite Flying FAQ & Safety Guide
Where to fly, what to avoid, how to pick the right wind, and the questions we get asked most about kites.
Fly kites in open ground with clear sky, well away from power lines, roads, railways and airports, and never in rain or a thunderstorm because wet line conducts electricity. A steady breeze of about 10 to 25 kmph suits most kites. Avoid glass-coated manja, which injures people and birds and is banned in several Indian states.
Flying safely
Kite Safety, Answered
The basics that keep kite flying enjoyable, especially with children.
Fly in a wide open space with clear sky: a park, open ground, beach or field. Stay well away from overhead power lines, electricity poles, mobile towers, roads, railway lines and airports. If a kite does get caught in a power line, leave it and walk away rather than trying to retrieve it.
Never fly near power lines, substations, busy roads, railway tracks or airports, and never during a thunderstorm. Wet line conducts electricity, which is why flying in rain or near overhead cables is the single most dangerous thing you can do with a kite.
Yes. Glass-coated and synthetic manja causes serious injuries to people, and to birds, and is banned in several Indian states. FLY360 uses plain, safe flying line. If you are buying line for children, buy ordinary cotton or polyester kite line, never coated manja.
Give children a short line rather than a long one, keep them in open ground away from trees and cables, and have an adult handle the launch. Gloves help on larger kites, because line can cut hands when a kite pulls hard in gusty wind.
A steady breeze of roughly 10 to 25 kmph suits most kites. Too little wind and the kite will not stay up; too much and the line load rises sharply. Watch for steady flags or moving leaves rather than gusty, swirling wind near buildings.
Stop pulling and lower both kites calmly rather than yanking, which is what causes line cuts and falls. In crowded flying grounds, keep a sensible distance from other flyers and be aware of where their lines run.
